The international community must stand by the Kurdish people affected by conflict and repression, a delegation of progressives from the Party of European Socialists, reaffirmed as it visited Turkey and the border area with Syria.

MEP Evin Incir, leader of the delegation, said:

“The Kurdish people want peace, democracy and for their human rights to be respected. In the face of aggressive tactics by President Erdogan and the Turkish Government, and after much bloodshed in the region, the international community must stand in solidarity with the Kurdish people. We cannot allow the political and cultural repression they face to go unchallenged. Progressives from across Europe are with the Kurds in their struggle for peace, democracy and freedom from oppression.”

Swedish MEP Evin Incir, Deputy Leader of the Italian Democratic Party Andrea Orlando, the coordinator of the international department of PD, Luciano Vecchi, and Deputy Secretary General of the PES Giacomo Filibeck travelled to south-east Turkey and the border area with Syria to show solidarity with the Kurdish people, particularly those affected by repression and the invasion of Rojava.

The delegation, accompanied during the whole mission by HDP MP Hişyar Özsoy, met with Başak Demirtaş, the wife of Selahattin Demirtaş - the leader of PES Associate member party HDP, who has been wrongfully imprisoned by the Turkish Government for the last three years - and many mayors and local administrators from HDP, who were dismissed for political reasons by the central Turkish authorities earlier this year. Despite efforts to repress its activity, HDP has continued backing from the Kurdish community, progressives, and beyond in Turkey.

The delegation also visited the families of the victims of the Turkish military action in the border town of Nusaybin, in the north-west of Syria, including "mothers for peace” – women who are campaigning to end the bloodshed in the region.

The war on Rojava has resulted in the death and injury of countless people and has devastated communities, including the Kurdish population in Turkey.

European socialists and democrats reaffirm the commitment to the Kurdish population who have been the subject of repression and violence, and once again call on the international community to intensify the pressure on the Erdogan government to pursue a peaceful path, based on a firm commitment to democracy and human rights for all people in Turkey and the whole region.
